From requirements to system design
Designing an evacuation alarm system starts with the programme of requirements and current floor plans. We establish the intended operation and the effects of construction, expansion or refurbishment. Open design decisions are discussed before they are incorporated into drawings or configuration.
Cause-and-effect matrix and as-built documentation
Alarm zones, controls and the fire detection interface must describe the same operation across the documentation. Depending on the assignment, we develop a cause-and-effect matrix or review diagrams and as-built documents. Missing requirements are identified so that unresolved design assumptions are clear.
Type A: loudspeaker design and speech intelligibility
For type A evacuation alarm design, we consider which spaces need spoken warnings and how loudspeakers, alarm zones and controls support them. Acoustics and ambient noise affect intelligibility. We record design decisions and open questions and agree which drawings, calculations and measurements are included in the assignment.
